Aerosol Filtration Testing of Fabrics for Development of Reusable Face Masks

The ongoing outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), triggered by the rapid community spread severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has brought forward need for speedy testing and manufacturing face masks global use. Overwhelmed fast-growing demand disposable masks, many governments have recommended use of, elaborated design criteria for, reusable that are meant to slow down transmission SARS-CoV-2 in general population. Using aerosol particle size spectrometers, we performed distribution measurements calculated fractional size-selective filtration efficiencies over 300 fabrics fabric-assemblies, including chiffon, cotton, synthetics, various promising layered combinations. We suggest, experimentally verify, a simple way estimating efficiency fabrics. analysis herein investigates relationship between breathability properties fabrics, assemblies commercial from regions around globe. In addition, demonstrate how hydrophobic coating can provide statistically significant increase fabrics’ efficiency. insights this work crucial developing non-woven, high-filtration-performance, be worn extended periods time.
